Every Kid Needs a Companion
The Influence My Parents Have Had
My parents have both been educators for the last 30+ years. I can vividly remember helping out in each of their classrooms and falling in love with the experience. My mom teaches kindergarten and my dad teaches woodworking and physical education. This is what gave me the drive to pursue teaching. I really enjoyed being in that setting and seeing the relationship that my parents had with their students and I knew that I wanted the same thing and this is the career for me.
Coaching
This year I had the amazing opportunity to coach the junior boys basketball team at Claremont Secondary School. I have learned so many valuable skills and lessons throughout this experience and this has planted the seed in me that makes me want to coach for years to come.
Volunteering
From January until the end of March 2015, I had been volunteering at Campus View Elementary School during their lunch hour. I would come in ten minutes prior to their lunch bell and set up games and activities for the students to do. This included floor hockey, benchball, relays, soccer and dodgeball. It was so great to be immersed in a situation where I could apply some of the lessons that I've learned throughout taking courses at UVic. Such as, checking for student understanding, walking around and not staying stationary, setting boundaries and rules for students to follow and, the ever important, usage of a whistle.
