Bonnie Sawyer is a pre-service teacher enrolled in the University of Victoria’s Secondary Post-Degree Professional Program. She received her BA (honours) with a major in history from the University of Guelph in 2012 and her MA (history) from the University of Victoria in 2014. She has over ten years of experience as a tutor for high school and undergraduate students and worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Victoria for two years in which she led seminars and marked coursework for six separate undergraduate history courses. Bonnie also has extensive experience working with youth outside of the classroom. She has taught swimming lessons to children and teenagers at the YMCA, and volunteered with Kids Help Phone and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre’s library. Her approach to education is founded upon a sense of community, passion for social justice, and critical pedagogy. She takes seriously the need to decolonize the Canadian education system and make the classroom a non-judgmental, multi-centric and inclusive environment.
