Above is a picture of my Grade 5 class at Bench Elementary. I attended Bench Elementary from Kindergarten to Grade 5, it was the place that ignited my plans to becoming a teacher. I learned so much more than just the curriculum at this school. I learned how to be a model teacher because I had such inspiring women teach me. I was able to take in knowledge from them and develop abilities through helping out in the classroom. The 3 Bees that were the schools values, still resignate with me today, "Be Respective, Be Responsible, Be Positive". I grew from a small girl entering the kindergarten to a young woman leaving grade 5, knowing what I wanted to do with my life at a young age. By helping around the school I was able to become a very organized young girl. I was always wanted to do more and learn more, taking out multiple books to read each week and writing stories in my free time. I found my niche for school there and haven't lost it since. I developed during those years and saw how professional my teachers as well as leaders were. I flourished at this school and carry the memories I made during those young years. I believe that this school plays a big role in why I decided to become a teacher and how I developed the core skills required in a teacher.
Educators are role models who act ethically and honestly.
This BC Teaching Standard reflects this experience because if I hadn't had teachers who were great role models, then I wouldn't have looked up to teachers the way I do now. I was able to confide in my teachers who were honest and open with me as I was with them. I felt comfortable with me teachers and looked up to them as role models in my life. By my teachers following this standard I was able to feel safe in my classroom and have open discussion with my teachers whether it was about life, learning or just about anything. The teachers at Bench Elementary were examples of those following the teaching standards and they represented how a teacher should connect with students and act in an honest as well as professional manner.
