Athlete of the Week Interview

Ice Hockey 2011

As A Teacher...

Educators value the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families and communities in schools.

This BC Teaching Standard relates to my life as an athlete because as an athlete I am very much involved in the community and with families. Through my extra curricular activities of sports I've been involved with lots of fundraisers and events held through the facilities. I've made strong connections with those around me through sports and have developed relations with important people. I have plenty of other teachers that have given me advice and have talked to coaches about the importance of their position.

Through sports I have learned to introduce myself and be friendly towards others, I am often the person engaging the conversation and learning new things from other people. I don't mind breaking the ice and introducing myself to be remembered. I enjoy getting the involvement from others and having them know my name for future reference.

As a player on a team I find interacting with teammates, families and those in the community can benefit me and build support from those all around.

Sports

I grew up in a household that believed family, school and sports were three of the most important things in life. My parents encouraged me to follow my passions and if it wasn't sports I was into they supported music and other extracurricular activities too.

Sports truly shaped the person I am today, I still have a passion for them today and continue to play Ice hockey and softball when I can. Sports are a part of who I am today and I still involve them heavily into my life. I grew up in teams a.k.a. my families. In ice hockey and softball I was surrounded with support and love on my teams. We endured a lot together whether it was a great win, tough loss or a long team bus ride, we grew close.

Through sports I learned the importance of teamwork, practice and instruction. I would say sports have also contributed to my choice of becoming a teacher because I looked up to my coaches (a.k.a. my Dad). I watched him write out practice plans, schedules and devote much of his time to better us athletes. He cared about us and wanted to see us succeed such as a teacher would.
