West Coast Wild A Nature Alphabet
Reflection on The Rainbow Fish
This lesson is based on the children's book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. I chose this book to introduce the students to the topic of peer acceptance and bullying. My aim for this lesson is for students to ask themselves "what qualities make a good friend?". Here they will have the chance to write their own story about their chosen quality on a storyboard template. They will also have the chance to decorate their own "postivie quality" scale on a large Rainbow Fish that will be displayed in the class. After receiving feedback, I became aware that the art portion of the lesson could be more effective if the students wrote out the meaning of their quality so they are clear on the expectations. This lesson would be best suited for a grade 2/3 class.
Reflection on West Coast Wild
The designated assignment would be best suited for a grade 4 or 5 class. I chose the book West Coast Wild A Nature Alphabet to introduce students to a research project based on west coast animals. My goal is for the students to gain a better understanding and appreciation for the environment and life we have here on the west coast. The aim of the lesson is for students to be able to sift through different resources to collect information and then practice note taking. Finally, I want the students to present their topic on a large poster board with plenty of visual aids. As the hook, I would like to take the students on a nature walk so they have the chance to observe some of the life that exists locally. Then, students would have have the freedom to choose an animal they are interested in exploring furthur. As a teacher, I would organise a collection of resources at the library so it is easier for students to access information.
Reflection of Penguin Mini-Unit
This mini-unit consists of four lessons all revolved around the theme of penguins. The lessons are best suited for a grade one class. The aim of the lessons is for students to practice their oral language, as well as their writing skills. The lessons will shift from non-fiction and fiction topics.
BC Standards for Teaching
These lesson plans for English Literacy correlate with the BC Standards of Teaching for a variety of reasons. One of these standards include professional contributions because I have shared my lessons which are free to use with my peers. In addition, I was able to demonstrate professional practice by thoughtfully creating lesson plans and ideas for possible assessment. I was able to think of cross curricular lessons, as well as include and refinements/extensions when applicable.
