First Nations Influences Integrated into Music Education

Rhythm Pattern Unit Plan

Reflection

This paper  speaks to the importance of incorporating First Nations material into music education. I strongly believe that  it is important to intoduce students to multiple perspectives in all subject areas in order to build well rounded citizens.  The new BC curriculum requires the integration of First Nations knowledge, therefore, it is essential that teachers  incoporate First Nations teachings into lessons. The BC Standard of Partnerships Families and Communities links nicely to this idea because  educators will require the involvment of the outside community or families  to  present  new ideas to students.  Also, the Student Growth and Development Standard relates because there is the intention of providing a broader knowledge to children.

Vic High R&B Band

During highschool I was a singer in the "Vic High R&B Band" which was an extra curricular band program. Here, I gained valuable experience in learning  the many components of music as well as learned the importance of work ethic and practice. In addition, this enjoyabale experience provided me with increased self confidence. As a result,  I am aware that students  can  improve their sense of identity through the use of music.

Reflection

This is a unit plan I created for a music class best suited for a grade 2 / 3 students. The unit is based on the recognizing the differences in short and long  rhythm patterns. I incorporated the use of puppets and streamers so the students are able to demonstrate their knowledge of the concept through movement. Unit plans I have created demonstrate my knowledge of effective practice in classroom management, instruction, assessment and planning. This semester I have learned I have been able to practice developing engaging lesson plans that are well thought out for a classroom setting.
