The second Google app is Google-sites that offers a drag and drop website that allows resources to be embedded and manipulated from google-drive.  Pages can be easily customized, created into a website and shared with different audiences.  Google-slides can be embedded within Google-sites. So work developed in the first level of digital portfolio can be integrated into the second level of Google-sites allow students to build on their previous work, making connections and reflecting on their learning process.  It should be noted that both these Google systems are not in compliance with Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).  This means that a person's personal information is stored in a cloud based server located outside of BC. If a cloud based storage system is not FIPPA compliant then no public service worker, teacher or student can be compelled to store private information on servers outside of BC.  In such circumstances a student for example must be given an alternative option to do the same task that does not involve storing private information in a server located outside of BC.  Google user agreement indicates that all information stored on their cloud system is owned by the user but based on the American patriot act, all information can be accessed by the American government, however this is highly unlikely.

The third system is an open-source cloud based system that is housed in BC cloud based system located in Vancouver called Folioz.  This system is powered by the Mahara software that is regularly updated.  Like Google-sites, Folioz allows users to create pages and collections that is customize-able and can be shared with different people or groups.  This digital portfolio system can serve as a learning hub as it allows google-sites to be embedded along with google-slides and array of other cloud based applications like Youtube, Vimeo, Slideshare, googledrvie and Prezi.

Three examples of how to make a digital portfolio are listed below in the following order.

  1. Simple - Googleslides
  2. Intermediate - Google-sites
  3. Advanced and learning hub - Folioz

Google-slide is a cloud based presentation that operates like Powerpoint but in a cloud based environment. The template here has been adapted to enable Google-slide to behave like a website with an index page and links on each page back to the index page.  Google-slide is very easy to use with a Googledrive account allowing text, images, video and hyperlinks to resources to be used easily.  The Master slides can be edited to change the slides using a particular slide.  Background color or image can be changed as needed.  The video shows the key features in Google-slide that can be sued for common digital portfolio processes.

What makes Folioz different from other digital portfolio (ePortfolio) systems is that you control which items and what information (artefacts) within your portfolio other users see. Folioz includes a page creation process that can be organized in collections. All pages and collections can be personalized with user decision about who can see and for how long.  Popular cloud applications like Prezi and Googledrive, can be embedded within Foloz pages. The video highlights the key features most digital portfolio users need.

The software system also includes a file repository, blogs, social networking, Resumé Builder and full integration of profile information like twitter, Skype, Google accounts and personal information that the user wishes to share.
