EPHE 310 course - PE for generalist teachers: Indigenous Learning Principles

The EPHE 310 course is focused on teaching games, child growth/development and fundamental movement skills in physical education. The process of the course is developed around the Lil’Wat language idea of Kamúcwkalha (the felt energy indicating group attunement and the emergence of a common group purpose). For this to happen students engaged in the course material as learners, observed children being taught PE in a local school and gradually took the responsibility for teaching the children PE. Learning in the course developed around concepts of active learning, social constructivism and situated learning. The course draws on three indigenous principles* to guide the learning processes of the course:

Put the learning of your peers before taking responsibility for your own learning (Celhcelh),
Create work that will benefit seven generations to come (Emhaka7), and
Find one's own passion and use it to energize the community (A7xekcal).

Extension assignments created by students

The collection of pages in this course portfolio represent the extension assignments completed by students in EPHE 310. An extension assignment represents an assignment that a student proposes based on course concepts but applied to area of interest for the student. For extension assignment to be passed it has to be proposed to the course instructor using an outline template focused on purpose, rationale, connection to informed literature, time-line and how to share with peers. Once the proposal is passed then the student has until the end of the course to complete the proposed assignment. Based on the criteria for final course grades (see below) each extension assignment addresses the descriptor. It is possible for a substantial piece of work can to be considered for two grades if it meets the criteria. Critically for more advanced work is that the assignment connects to the informed literature.
