Commitment, care and long term learning

Commitment to the education and development of students is something that appears in a number of different forms. Something as simple as staying behind after class or organizing sessions for students to work on certain skills are key examples of this. It is also very possible for someone who is not yet in the school environment as a teacher to prove their commitment to education.

Since a very young age I have played a key role in the participation of rec sports. In high school I helped organize the first "Jamison cup" hockey game between the students and the teachers, which since then has become a school tradition. In my grade 12 year I opted to act as a teachers assistant for a grade 8 class. This was my first ever "teaching" role and was the first time I realized I wanted to become a teacher. i also have coaching experience . I have been coaching hockey since the age of 17 as a goalie instructor and more recently acted as head coach for a grade 7 boys basketball team based out of St, Josephs school. Coaching at St. Joseph's was an amazing experience, allowing me to work with an age group I never had before. The teacher sponsor of my team went above and beyond writing me a reference letter which I have scanned and placed to the right of this text block. These experiences were the building blocks to a foundation I have developed over the years in order to become the aspiring teacher I am today.

Part of being a good educator is to listen and respond to your pupils. It can be very easy to dismiss the ideas or suggestions of students because you are in a position of power in the classroom, gymnasium or ice rink as the teacher or coach. Continuously listening and developing your talents as an instructor is the only way to keep students engaged. This continuous adaptation to new methods, new curriculum, new technology is crucial if teachers wish to maintain relevant to their students and as a result be a more efficient facilitator for learning in the classroom. Since the beginning of my sports career developing from a participant to organizer, coach, and finally teacher I have been developing an adapting my role and methodology in order to fit the present need which is something I plan on continuing for the entirety of my teaching career.

Rewards of Coahing

I had an amazing group of boys on my grade 7 basketball team this year and it was an amazing opportunity for me. At the end of the year the boys and some of the parents gave me a few cards to thank me for my time which I saved. Amazing experience all around!
