Analyzing Game Play Performance

As the unit progresses toward the festival at the end, and mini games are being played more and more, you can bring the above assessment sheets together while watching students during game play.

Peer Assessment

A great way to facilitate learning is to have the students perform peer assessments on each other. To do this effectively, you need to supply the students with a sheet that breaks down a skill into its key components. The students then assess their partners execution with reference to the handout and are able to give feedback to their partners. By having the students teach each other these skills, they are actually themselves improving their own ability. Additionally, it adds a great social opportunity for the students to lead and teach each other. Some examples of peer assessment sheets are shown below.

This is a great tool that could be used for peer assessment during a volleyball unit!

These assessment forms could be implemented during some of the lessons toward the end of the unit (lesson 7+ in our block plan) where we have practice games being played and lead by coaches, officials and managers.

Assessing peers is a task that can be assigned to different students (ex. the coach). They would be given a clipboard with this form to fill out as they watch their partner participate in the mini-games. Then time would be allotted for the students to discuss what checks or exes had been recorded and why.

It will be helpful to both the people assessing and the people trying to perform the specific movements. The recorder is learning about each skill by watching their partner perform, or attempt to perform it. Their understanding is also supplemented by sharing their feedback with their peer. The person participating in the mini game gets to improve through one on one direction. It will also be good for them to be able to focus on improving one skill at a time, with immediate feedback coming from their peer.
