I got involved coaching my old high school Basketball team as an assistant coach! That year we had a lot of success, and came third in Single A Provincials. The great time that I had motivated me to become a teacher. This team was my first coaching experience, and I don't think I could have had a better group of kids. They were motivated, intelligent, and very skilled. One of our better players was only in grade 10 at the time, and he was playing full time for our senior squad. The captain of our team was not the most skilled player, but he would work harder than anyone else. Since we were such a small school, we were in the single A league. We qualified for provincials and were ranked very high in the provincial standings! When we went to provincials in Langley, we had a lot of fans from our small town travel out to cheer on our team. This community spirit was very cool to see. We ended up coming third in provincials after some great games. Even though I was only an assistant coach, it was such a valuable experience that I will never forget.

While attending University I was required to coach a team for my Coaching Studies class. I found a Junior Boys Basketball team at St. Andrews High School. This team was very different from my first coaching experience. It was a big adjustment at first, because this team was full of students who had never really played basketball before. They were not the most athletic kids, and they had very little knowledge of the sport. They were a very fun group, and really enjoyed coming to practices and games. We weren't trying to push winning too much to the kids, instead we were teaching them the fundamentals they needed to be able to play the sport. Near the end of our season we picked up our first and only win, and the kids were so excited. It was such a rewarding experience. The team was filled with great individuals, and I hope they learned as much as I did from the basketball season.

When I was in high school I coached a softball team that consisted of my friends and family. This was my real first taste of coaching experience, even though it was my friends. We joined a community league, that at the time was very popular. We did not start off the season great, but we ended up doing well in the playoffs, upsetting a couple teams that were supposed to do well. My friends inspired me to coach again, so I did it for a few years. I ended up loving it, and was very grateful that I got to experience coaching my friends and family.
