As a secondary school teacher, I believe that it is my job to teach students how to grow and make a positive impact on society. To be a teacher, you provide students with more than just knowledge on a certain subject. Teachers are role models, counselors, parental figures, and educators.
Teachers spend a large amount of time with students every day, and sometimes it can be more than the times they get to spend with their parents. This means that students learn a lot of life’s lessons from their teachers, and they have a big affect on who that student will turn out to be as an adult. As a teacher, I feel a lot of responsibility, and I hope to teach in a way that allows my students to grow up and contribute in a positive way to society. This starts with me being a contributing member of society, and my community, and teaching by example.
There are many qualities that make a person capable of contributing to society, and it can be done in many different ways. Being responsible for one’s own actions is a quality that I am going to pass on to my students. I believe it is important for students to know that for all the actions they take, there are both positive and negative consequences. Learning to stay positive and make the best of situations is another quality that I am going to pass on. Life is not always fair, but there are some things that are out of our control, and we have to stay positive and do what we can to improve our situation. Teacher students how to think critically and not just do as they’re told is something that I believe is not being taught enough in schools. There are too many students who are afraid to think for themselves. As a teacher I am going to effectively think critically, and to effect critical thinking.
While keeping these qualities in mind, I am going to create a classroom atmosphere that is fun, engaging, and motivating for all of the students involved. Students will show up to class wondering what is going to happen each and every day. Students who do not enjoy a class are not going to be as interested in the material when compared to a class that they do enjoy. Every lesson I teach is going to have an aspect that tries to reach out to as many students as possible that they can enjoy. Incorporating activities into lessons to keep students moving is going to important to me, because I believe it allows the students to become more engaged. When they have to use the knowledge they learned in a lecture, and use it in a scenario, it creates for a deeper understanding of that knowledge.
