About me

I was born and raised in Cowichan Bay, BC. Thus, I love the ocean, and being out in nature, beachcombing and hiking. My free time is spent with friends and family. I am fortunate that my extended family lives on the Island.

I am currently a student in the Post Degree Professional Program at UVIC. I completed a B.A. in English and a Minor in History at the University of Victoria in 2016. I am passionate about history, literature and about engaging students in successful learning environments. Presently, in the PDP program, I am doing an inquiry project on what motivates students to learn. During my practicum, I hope to explore “motivation” further through the use of multimodal and collaborative ways of learning. I want to learn how to teach to the diversity of my classroom, including English Language Learners and Inclusive Education students. I believe that everyone has the ability to learn and succeed and that it is the teacher’s role to facilitate a caring and captivating learning environment.

Great idea for a lesson with lots of potential sparks for learning. Participating in tribal voyages in some way could be a strong connection. There were extensive tribal voyages that explored the coast and the world and they continue now each year. Hawaii was a big part of early voyages. I can't see all of your pages yet, but look forward to coming back and checking them out!

Quality over quantity! Your artifact is has great detail and speaks to a very important issue, First Nations. Your writing is eloquent and easy to read. I love how you tied indigenous culture from elsewhere into a lesson possibility for a BC class. I was confused about how this was relevant at first, but understood it by the end. I encourage you to do a little more set up of the context. This was a great tie into ethical understanding for the BC standards. It is a great start, and I am excited to see more artifacts from you!

Hi Breanna, Great video. It will be nice to see how you bring that connection to family and to nature into your classroom. I think I recognized a picture at the entrance to the North coast trail-is that possible? I think you should be adding some reflections about the socials course, you can think about it in general, you can answer some of the questions I have posed via email, and I would like to see you make connections between the course and the curriculum. Choose a couple of socials courses and make some inquiry questions and imagine some potential activities that you could do that would build on the course material to meet the core competencies and big ideas of the selected courses. Think a little about how this connects to your understanding of what the purpose of teaching is, and how it can be done. I'm looking forward to seeing more soon!

Who Am I Video Project

George Jay Elementary School "Go Girls"

IMG_1134.jpg

I choose to include this photo of a "Go Girls" group that I was a part of at George Jay Elementary School (May 2017) because it represents my "care and commitment to children and youth" a mandate of the BC Teacher Standards. The kids brought me so much joy! Over the last year I was privileged to be a mentor to two Big Brothers Big Sisters "Go Girls" groups in Victoria. The goal of this program is to promote healthy eating, active living and good self-esteem. With the other mentors, I helped students foster growth and development as they developed greater self-esteem and confidence throughout the program. In relation to the BC Teacher Standards, I also participated in "the partnerships of teachers, families and communities." As mentors, we interacted with the principle, the school counsellors, and the student's parents. Through this program, I learned how important it is to build relationships with your students, their parents and the professional community. I also learned that it is important to adapt your lessons according to students interests to carry out a successful lesson. Looking forward, I will take these lessons into a future classroom. Most importantly, I will be sensitive to the needs of individual learners and base my teaching around this.
