The use of a task or activity used to determine and monitor student progress.  Results are used to adjust instruction based on the needs of the students.  Occurs throughout a unit and provides valuable feedback to student and teacher.  Also known as Formative Assessment.

Allows students the opportunity to use assessment as self reflection and identification of personal strengths and weaknesses.  Often performed using self and peer assessment.  Very appropriate in Physical Education.

Task of measuring, recording and reporting student success in comparison to specific learning outcomes, criteria or norms.  Is often the culminating task of a unit or course.  Also known as Summative Assessment.
