My philosoph(ies) of education: ongoing
Students need to be active participants in their learning
-
people learn best by including a physical aspect; learning by doing improves retention and often interest
-
students need to learn how to take notes and filter out what is important, and how to research
-
students should be encouraged to look into topics beyond the textbooks and assignments
-
students need to have some self-assessment in their work in order to own their learning process
Students need timely and specific feedback
-
criteria/rubrics should be given to the students
-
feedback should be given as promptly as feasible
-
feedback should be specific rather than vague
-
written feedback should be more important than letter or number grades, and marks should be based on individual student learning rather than grading on a curve
Students should know how to access resources on their own
-
students should know how to research and what sources are more reliable than others, and how bias may affect them
-
options for students to find mentors and resources in their area of interest should be made available
-
teacher-learner rather than strictly teacher
-
lectures and coursework should inspire students to learn further and push themselves
