Inquiry Project

About My Inquiry Project

This year in my seminar course I was given the opportunity to explore any question of my choice, and research both its history and strategies. Something which had interested me for a long time was the gender associations tied to instruments. This has greatly affected the musical experience of people of all genders for many years. My inquiry was to research effective strategies for the extinguishing of these gender associations. In the included slide show, I have displayed the historical contributions that I discovered through research and a survey which was responded to by 26 music educators. Amongst the survey responses, we are able to see that my original ideas about my inquiry topic are still prevalent in the instrumental classroom. As a visual aspect of my inquiry project, I printed off the written recommendations that teachers provided me in the survey. From this project, I have become equipped with a myriad of strategies to approach this issue with.

This project assisted me in better understanding the BC Core Competency, Critical Thinking. This was done by my investigation of an issue which I had analyzed for a long period of time. I loved being able to take an issue close to my heart and put effort and time toward it in order to better understand its history and persistence in society.
