Experience with Youth
The majority of my experience with youth has come through Physical Education and coaching. After graduating, I helped out with the senior girls’ basketball and soccer teams at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School for one season. Last summer, I also worked at the Steve Nash Hoops for Youth Camp that was put on at Mark R. Isfeld, which enabled me to work with students ranging from kindergarten to grade 12 in a basketball environment. Through my post-secondary schooling I have been given opportunities to get out into some of the local Victoria schools to teach a few Physical Education lessons as well. Last year I taught two lessons on table tennis to a grade 10 class from Mount Douglas Secondary School, and I am currently observing and teaching in a Physical Education class at Claremont Secondary School. Recently, I also had the chance to teach one volleyball lesson at Arbutus Global Middle School. From September to December of 2014, I volunteered as a student athletic trainer for the Velox Football and Rugby Club, and from November 2014 through to February 2014 I was coaching the junior girls’ basketball team at Mount Douglas Secondary School.
Coaching is something that has become a great interest of mine. Over the past four months, I have been amazed at how much growth I have seen in my Mount Douglas girls, and I have found great joy in making connections to students through physical activity. Coaching is something that I definitely want to continue to pursue while doing my post-secondary education, and it is something that I would love to be involved in when I become a teacher. I loved coaching basketball, as it is a sport I have played all through my life, but I would be interested to try my hand at coaching other sports as well.
Personal Experience
My involvement in sport has brought me countless positive memories and joy, especially soccer. I have spent the vast majority of my life playing competitive soccer, and over the years I have been given amazing opportunities through soccer. When I was 15, my rep soccer team travelled to Holland to play in the Youth International Friendships Games where we came third. As a team, we also qualified for the BC Provincial Championships five times, winning one silver medal and two bronze medals.
