Why English?

I love stories! I literally can't get enough! Which I find pretty funny because when I was young I absolutely disliked reading. I used to think to myself "ugh its seems like so much work and effort". Then one day I was at home bored with nothing to do, and on the coffee table was a novel called Generation A by Douglas Coupland. Picking that novel up changed my view about literature forever!

I decided to pursue a degree in education. We all can admit that we all had that one teacher in high school who made english almost unbearable, I want to change that! English is FUN! I want to teach these students to love english again. A fantastic example is Shakespeare, some students cringe just hearing the name… why? This man has written some of the best plays known to mankind. However some students may find it difficult to read, which could turn them away from exploring something beautiful. Thats why as educators we need to find a way to make english literature engaging. Have the students stand up and act out a funny scene from "Much Ado About Nothing", have them create a modernized version of the play, have a class discussion or even a debate! There are many ways to bring these stories to life, the question is how do you want to do it?
