Kyle Long

I am currently attending the University of Victoria to complete my Bachelors of Education of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE). My teaching areas are Physical Education and English.

Throughout my years at the University of Victoria I have been able to obtain experiences and opportunities that have helped me grow as a person and as a future educator. Through these experiences and opportunities I have been able to create my own personal teaching methods. As a teacher I will influence a wide diversity of children and their learning abilities. I know all students can learn, and education allows me to create and build different ways to teach material, so all students have the ability to learn. I believe by enabling choice within the classroom we enable learning. By doing this we create a positive environment for these students to thrive in. Being able to balance the needs of individual learners with the needs of the entire class is completely possible.

I am becoming a teacher because I want to make a positive change in these students’ lives. I want to be a mentor and figure students look up to, just like mine did for me. Our role as teachers is to listen to these students’ and open them up to new creative ways of thinking and learning. My goal as an educator is to provide a positive learning environment for my students’, an environment that allows the progression of knowledge and wisdom in a student’s life.

We live in times where technological change is occurring and this change is inevitable. Educators need to evolve with this change and use it! We as teachers need to develop ways promoting learning to a generation of students who are born into a world full of technological advancements. British Columbia is beginning to do this with their “Rethinking Curriculum” project, by transforming curriculum and assessment that will help teachers create learning environments that are both engaging and personalized for students. With these tools, we are able to deliver information and teach these students with a wide variety of methods, which will accommodate a range of learning levels. 

I am deeply passionate about being a part of these students’ growth and development years. As teachers we need to be that figure that will always support them, care about them and most of all educate them.
