Right to Play
I am an advocate for Right to Play which is a global organization using the transformative power of play to educate and empower children and youth. Through playing sports and games, Right To Play teaches children essential life skills that help them overcome the effects of poverty, conflict and disease so they can create better futures and drive lasting social change in their communities and beyond. I have been a co-organizer for the Right to Play Dodgeball tournament hosted at UVIC in November 2015.
Field Experience
One of the courses I took at UVIC allowed me to gain practical teaching experience by developing a rugby lesson for a grade 9 boys PE class at Oak Bay Secondary. Mr. Campbell, Mr. Peacock and myself focused on creating a lesson that would be engaging and fun for the boys. We had to break down each game we played and discuss the various tactical components in order to understand why the game was relevant to their learning. I really enjoyed this experience as I had no prior rugby experience and it was a great opportunity to expand my teaching abilities and learn about a sport that I really knew nothing about. Working with my partners allowed us to collaborate and create a fun lesson and build off of each others knowledge
