About me

Me and a big tree I grew up in crescent beach with a swimmer for a father and a diver for a mother. To say my life revolved around the water would be an understatement.  When I wasn't swimming in the ocean I was floating in the public pool where my mother was a coach or playing in the creek in my grandparents back yard. I grew up encouraged to go outside, to get dirty and to be independent. I have always loved to climb trees, float in water and dig my hands into the soil. When it came to choosing a degree Marine Biology was my obvious choice. I graduated with a Bsc of Biology from the University of Victoria in 2015. My degree expanded my love for the environment but it also highlighted my lack of desire for a career in research. Quite early on I became aware that my interest in science and specifically biology was rooted in a desire to share that knowledge with others.

As a teenager I began to coach diving which is where I discovered my love for working with youth. This job as a coach lasted over 15 years and took me to pools all over the province. I had the opportunity to work with a set of athletes from diverse ages, abilities and backgrounds. My experience as a coach served to increase my desire to educate and work with others.

Both my degree in biology and my job as a coach have led to my commencement of the Secondary Post-  Degree Professional Program back at the University of Victoria. I am very excited to be entering the teaching field at such a dynamic and important time in B.C. I look very forward to all of the experiences, resources and ideas I am going to gain over the next 14 months.

Whom am I?

One of my favorite games that my father used to play with my sister and I was the bird game. Whenever we went on long car rides he would give us a quarter every time we saw a hawk or an eagle. We kept our eyes peeled, yelling out quickly so we would be the first to get the points. I never actually collected the money I earned and that was never the point but what I did take away was an appreciation for my surroundings and a desire to look beyond myself.

I still have a keen interest in the world around me. I love to look under rocks, to zoom in on leaves and to touch the bark of trees. I would love to collect bits from the beach and forest but I know that each piece has a part to play and so I leave them be. Instead I collect photos, drawings, descriptions and lists of all the amazing things I have seen in my life. I always travel with my identification guides, sketchbook and a set of pencils.

I believe that it is so important to be attentive to ones place. By focusing in we can begin to understand the interconnectedness of everything. I want to engage students to look around them and ask why and how things are the way they are. I believe that by doing so students will become more culturally and environmentally aware. I also believe that this is an important starting point to supporting more socially responsible students.
