Make it Rain: Reflection
This was a lab activity which I created and actually demonstrated during my science curriculum class. I really enjoyed the process of both picking my own demonstration and observing the demonstrations of my colleagues. I think the experience and resource creation we are undertaking together will be incredibly valuable as I move into my career.
This artifact reflects the BC Ministry of Education's Effective Practice in Instruction standard. The creation and implementation of a successful lab demonstration supports my abilities to actually create an activity which has educational power in a science classroom. By creating a lab handout I will have an effective resource for my career.
This activity helped me realized the importance of trying out a lab activity at home first to ensure that it works. It also taught me the importance of creating a clear and through lab handout for both myself and any other colleagues who would wish to use my handout.
I hope to use this first activity as a baseline to help as I develop new lessons and activities to be implemented in the classroom. I also am looking forward to the time when I get to use this lab activity to link into a unit in an actual classroom.
Leafsnap: Reflection
This was the first full lesson plan that I created in the University of Victoria's Secondary PDPP. It is a lesson which is close to my heart because it focus on the Indigenous principles of learning through place. I feel very strongly about place based learning and the incredible power it holds.
This artifact supports the BC Ministry of Education's Partnerships family and community standard by it's inclusion of a guest speaker from a local indigenous community. My hope would to be to respectfully reach out to a local Indigenous community (I have kept this general on purpose) to incorporate authentic First People's use and understanding of certain plants. I think it is important , whenever possible, to support the voice of actual members of a community as opposed to speaking for them.
This lesson provided me with an opportunity to be creative and really explore a topic that I think is interesting and important. I really enjoyed exploring the option to go outside and support students to familiarize themselves with their own environments.
Going forward i will need to develop the ability to create lessons which are more succinct. It is very easy to take topics and expand them into multi day lessons but I think it is very important to be able to produce lessons which are just one class long. Student interest and enthusiasm should be a major driver in lessons which are longer in nature.
Is that Actually Good For You?: Reflection
Are Myths Scientific?: Reflection
This is one of my favourite lessons that I have produced during this semester. I really enjoyed just how seamlessly the Science and English components of the lesson were woven together. I think that as a science teacher it is incredible important to give reference to and appreciation for other ways of knowing. I feel that in Canada it is especially important to understand the First People's understanding of the natural world which was the dominant way of understanding in our country for the majority of it existence. I think that it is important to both understand how science and myth are similar but also how they are different.
This lesson supports both the BC Ministry of Education's Care and Commitment standard by exploring culturally diverse ways of knowing. I think that education and specifically science education can be very exclusionary in its content and ideals. The new curriculum is supporting students and educators to create lessons which explore the different ways students can be positioned in the world and the value of that diversity. This lesson highlights both the importance of science to our understanding of the world but also to the importance of the stories that envelop certain cultures.
I really enjoyed learning about all of the different myths and stories that exist around the world and the value these stories have brought into lives. I think that as a science teacher it is important to explore the difference between science and story as we work to create more scientifically literate citizens.
Moving forward I would make sure to have a very clearly developed message with this lesson. I think that the line can get easily blurred and if the teacher isn't supporting discussion in a strong way then misconceptions can be created or supported. With any lesson it is incredibly important to be confident in the material you are presenting.
