Welcome to my page!
A little about me...
Over the years I have had many wonderful opportunities to work with students and their families, which have added to my abilities to be an affective teacher. My time working with various summer camps is where I first really started to see the incredible transformation that can happen in students when they are celebrated and given opportunity to be creative. Here I saw student who were bullied and neglected, take a chance to be themselves in front of others; here I saw students leave their comfortable place of ‘popularity’ to look silly and have fun; here I saw a staff team work together for the growth of a community of young people. Through connections at camp I was introduced to a school in India where I was a teacher for a couple months. My time at the school was an opportunity to practice being flexible with quick changes and being willing to try anything. This mindset brought on a wealth of new experience such as heading up the Duke of Edinburgh program, directing, writing, and building the set for the end of school play, and teaching grades K-12 whenever needed. Transition from teaching in India to teaching in Canada at Stelly’s High School last year had its difference and its similarities. My experiences working with different languages and cultures in India taught me respect and creativity, which, when approaching students from other cultures at Stelly’s, was a helpful reminder and tool to help student learn well. Creating an inclusive and student-celebrating environment is something I place great worth in. I believe that if the students in my class feel that they are a part of something healthy, and if they feel important to that community, the class will be a success.
All of these experiences have been opportunities that have challenged me and enhanced my appreciation for being an affective teacher.
