Capstone Folioz Orientation

The ePortfolio process implies a journey into new ways of collecting, inter-relating, organizing and sharing your learning.  You are free to engage with any aspect of the orientation at any time. However, the orientation is outlined in sequential fashion beginning with the conceptual overview videos called "Why use an ePortfolio?" and "What is an Artifact"? The "How To" videos in the third column at right provide technical and navigational assistance in creating first your Profile Page and then your Content Pages.

Course Outcomes (Objectives) and ePortfolio

Below are the course outcomes (objectives) for your work this semester.  The objective for your portfolio work is formally identified in the last outcome but your work in the portfolio will encompass all of the objectives as through the process of working on your porfolio you will contribute to the completion of the other objectives.

  • Articulate your definition of social work practice and the relationship of theory to your own practice.
  • Understand  the social justice foundation of the profession and identify opportunities to embed this concept in your everyday practice
  • Engage with peers in critically examining social work practice using a range of theories and perspectives .
  • Recognize the various role(s) social workers have or could occupy in organizations.
  • Demonstrate the skills of a reflexive social worker.
  • Identify your own emerging framework of practice through the preparation and sharing of your ePortfolio

The ePortfolio

Before coming to GPRC, I used to teach at the University of Victoria (UVic).  Scott Gerrity, the eP support person for the NT 2300 course, put together a short collection of both UVic Indigenous and non-Indigenous Social Work faculty discussing their reasons for using an ePortfolio. How might you begin thinking on your own ePortfolio?

Why use an ePortfolio?

ePortfolio Artifacts

What is an artifact in the ePortfolio? How do I go about choosing them and for what purpose? Below, UVic Indigenous and non-Indigenous Social Work faculty discuss their understanding of ePortfolio artifacts and share their own examples.

What is an artifact?

Instructions for the Unit 3 Learning Activities

It is important that you get started with creating your eP profile as soon as possible.  It is equally important that you commit time regularly to building your eP pages so that at the end of the course you will not have to rush through the building process.

We are listing some guiding questions that should help you get started and to which you might refer as you become more familiar with the course content and the eP process:

1. What one or two artifacts have you thought of using after watching the video about ePortfolios and artifacts? Why these artifacts?

2. Knowing that your ideas about organizing your ePortfolio will develop as you move through the semester, what do you see as possible "themes" in relation to the course objectives at this point for your ePortfolio?
