Equipment management
Equipment will be spread out and stored on one side of the gym. Students will be instructed to bring equipment back, especially balls. Any throwing will be warned to not do once and then the person will be asked to sit out until they can control the impulse to throw balls.
The equipment shown here will be used throughout the unit. The playground ball is used to help novice students gain confidence with passing, dribbling and shooting with the lighter ball. This will enable the students to develop the mechanics of the manipulative skills.
The plastic lines and corners will be used create grids for passing games and markers for shooting. The lines and corners allow games to be adapted to increase or decrease space to challenge students. The cones will be used as targets for passing games and corners as needed in modified games. The hoops can be used ot store balls and stop them rolling but also used as targets for shooting practice.
The whistles and clipboard will be used to play the end of unit festival and for practice games. The clipboard will also be used for doing game-play assessments. Pinnies will be used to distinguish the teams.
The elastic lines tied to the baskets create multiple targets for shooting practice to practice for the hotshot challenge.
Key idea with the use of modified equipment is to allow students choice to help themselves improve. Equipment managers on each team will be responsible for organizing team to quickly collecting in the equipment and making sure equipment is put away when not used.
Routines and Procedures
Routines and procedures for running the class need to established with students in the first class. Here are the key ones for this unit.
- Students expected to be changed to do PE unless excused with a medical reason. Time need to change is 5 mins with those arriving early allowed to play with the equipment.
- Equipment managers will organize equipment use on court assigned to team. Initial lesson equipment distributed on teacher's instructions.
- Bathroom breaks not normally allowed unless medical reason. Students can ask teacher if issue urgent.
- Teacher call students into designated for administrative instructions or for teaching a new game/skill. Students expected to leave balls and sit to listen to instructions.
- Teacher will stop activity at times for safety reasons , but also to clarify points, ask questions or show demonstrations. Attention expected when signal given. Whilst may be used but often call such as "and Stop!'
- Lessons will end with clear up of equipment and return to teacher for closure questions and review plans for next class.
Grouping Strategies
A key strategy in this extended unit is to develop the students into teams based on their survey responses and assessment of their play in the first two lessons. Within each team students will be given roles to do to help the team progress and to earn team experience points for their team. These team experience points draw on a gamification process where positive social behaviours are encouraged by team experience points to make team management tasks fun. The roles also offer a way to gather evidence of students develop personal and social responsibility competencies noted in the BC Curriculum.
Throughout the unit students will be mixed up regular with the teacher assigning pairs at times, swapping partners, asking students to pair with a player from opposite sex or at same height of different height. Key idea would be change partners as a normal event in a lesson. At times students will also be grouped in their team group.

Gym set-ups
The imagined gym to be used in this unit is shown here in the picture. The court lines are marked out on the first diagram. This is used to map out the use of space in the Google slides planning documents. The grid lines are mapped out for practice games and progressions.
The final diagram shows the set-up for two games of 3 on 3 and then a team practicing a modified game in the middle court area. This becomes a station area for teams to practice tasks and drills learned in the unit.
Discipline strategies
A positive discipline approach will be used to reinforce positive behaviour. Team experience points will be awarded when students to actions that benefit their team or the whole group. Points will be awarded for team spirit points that promote team affiliation. Team points will be used to award completing task quickly. Care will be taken to only use the point to promote prosocial behaviour and to keep team scores close. End of unit trophy given to the Total Team who wins the league points.
When negative situations happen students will be held accountable for their actions but always with a goal of minimizing the situation. If you don't increase it you do not own it. Also, do not create a stage when dealing with negative actions and do not take any bad behaviour personally as not about you.
If students are late for class without reason, or not changed within 5 mins as expected, then report to teacher at the end of class. If reason for tardiness not acceptable student given one warning to improve or have detention after school with 24 hours notice.
