Introduction

This page is all about management and procedures. It outlines how equipment will be organized, distributed, and returned. It also displays the equipment that is required to do the lesson. This page also outlines routines and procedures (including bathroom breaks and athletic attire rules), the gym layout, grouping strategies, and behaviour/discipline strategies.

Equipment Management

Equipment will be treated with care. Equipment is stored in an equipment room when not in use, and in a volleyball basket when in use. Balls are given out individually, and are returned individually. Throwing balls in the basket or taking balls when not instructed to will result in reminders first. If it happens more than once the student will be a coach for the next game and provide cues to their peers.

The equipment shown is what will be used in the lessons. The volleyballs, nets, and gym space are used during every lesson, while the pinnies are for games, the hoops are for target practice, and the clipboard is used to record scores. If modified equipment is available, use softer/lighter balls for students who need the assistance with their skill development.

Gym Set-up

The imagined space used for the proposed volleyball unit is displayed through the diagrams shown below under the Gym Diagrams tab. These diagrams outline the set up of the courts in addition to the set up of the culminating game.

The first diagram shows the set up of the three "volleyball" courts to be used by the students. We have included the use of three badminton courts should that be what is available for use. This diagram shows the placement of the nets in addition to the placement of the courts.

The second diagram shows the set up for the cumulative game of 3on3 Volleyball with an observer. It displays both the placement of the students in addition to the lines and placement of the net.

Grouping Strategies

Grouping is an important aspect for classes of 20+ students. In the lessons designed, grouping is done by the teachers. The students line up along the baseline, and the teacher gives each student a number up to 8. this happens 3 times. All of the 1's go together, 2's together, and so on. To shake things up, in one lesson we give letters (A-H) instead, and each team is instructed to choose an animal that starts with the letter they were given (example: A's are Anteaters). The groups of 3 stay together and play the group of 3 across the net.

This strategy allows students to continually work with new partners and group. This improves social competencies, and creates a positive environment where nobody is left out. If a student is not working well with others, a change can be made.

For the festival, the teacher decides on teams based on who people work well with, and to balance ability level. Teams choose a team spirit person, and official, and a coach. They get points on the festival day for the duties.

Routines and Procedures

Routines and procedures help set the precedent for what is expected of students from the first class. Listed below are the key ones for this unit.

  1. Students are expected to come to class prepared to participate unless excused with a medical reason.
  2. Students will begin the class by sitting down on the far side of the gym facing the stage, and from there the introduction to the lesson will take place.
  3. Students are expected to hold on the balls or place them on the ground in order to listen to instructions.
  4. Teacher will stop the activity in order to transition between games, but also to give teaching points, ask questions, or show demonstrations. Attention is expected from all students when the teacher signals for it.
  5. Bathroom breaks are not normally allowed unless a valid reason is given. Exceptions can be made if the issue is urgent.
  6. Lesson will end with the students placing the volleyballs into the bin, and gathering around the teacher for a debrief of the activity and a release from class.

Behaviour Expectations

The following is expected of every student:

  • Arrive to class on time
  • Arrive to class physically ready to participate
  • Arrive in appropriate gym strip
  • Treat others with respect (physically, verbally, and emotionally)
  • Be supportive and encouraging towards classmates
  • Treat equipment with respect
  • Take out & return equipment when told by the teacher

If students meet these expectations:

  • The teacher will positively reinforce the behaviour
  • Give rewards (at teacher's discretion)
  • Their team may be given an advantage during festivals

If students do not meet these expectations:

  • The student will receive a verbal reminder first
  • If behaviour persists, the student will be assigned an alternative role in the class (teacher's assistant, videographer, or will be paired with a responsible peer)
  • If the behaviour becomes a problem, a call will be made home, and the student will be under supervision in the office
