Peer Teaching

The video below is our peers from EPHE 452 giving us feedback on our 15 minute lesson we taught in class, and the reflection we wrote on the same class.

My biggest takeaway after doing the planning and then peer teaching was that I need to incorporate more logistical details into my lesson planning so that the safety and flow of the lesson is improved.

When doing the line game we should have made sure each individual group spread out to use the entire space. There were groups too close together which increased the chance of them running into each other, or tripping over other team's equipment, etc. Another thing we forgot to consider when peer teaching is coordinate students to clean up equipment. To have an organized class this is necessity.

Thinking about partner and group pairings ahead of time will also be important when teaching groups of students. If you always let students choose their own partner or group then the same kids will always go together and it is inevitable that there will be students who feel disappointed, let down or not included. Small tricks like having them partner up with someone that has the same shoe color as them, or is wearing the same color shirt, and having them always go with a new partner takes away the uncomfortable feelings for some students that will happen with partner choosing.

Peer Teaching Feedback

Peer Teaching Reflection

Field Experience

Below is the feedback from our supervisor teacher after we had the opportunity to each at Arbutus Middle School this term. We taught a Grade 8 class three PE lessons during their volleyball unit.

The marked-up lesson plan below is the first lesson volleyball lesson we taught at Arbutus with our supervising teacher's notes included.

The feedback was very consistent with our take-aways from the peer teaching experience. Our supervisor was great at giving us small pointers around organization during lessons. As shown below, he told us tips such as having the students sit when you are talking to them to minimize movement and distraction, and allow us to see them better .We discussed other tactics for monitoring behaviour like never having your back to the class, and planning appropriate groups ahead of time. He encouraged us to use strategies like 'counting down' when calling the students in so that they hustled. To encourage understanding through peer teaching and cooperation during drills and games we talked about allowing time for teams to come together and make a 'game plan' together.

Supervisor Teacher Feedback

Self Assessment Explanation

This self assessment form was completed after all of our student teaching lessons at Arbutus Middle School. It includes our major learnings from the experience and questions we need to keep considering going forward.

We were really excited to receive positive feedback from our supervisor teacher! As he mentions in the comments section we were able to take a lot of the feedback he gave us after the first lesson and implement it by the second lesson. This demonstrates the big idea that I can receive constructive feedback, collaborate and be responsive to the needs of different learners.

Learning Experiences in EPHE 452

All of the positive feedback experiences in EPHE have resulted in growth and further understanding for me.

Our class was really great about sharing "Hints and Hurrahs" during the peer assessment of our 15 minute lesson and that was really helpful, because who better to give feedback than the people who participated in the drill.

We included similar questions to ask at the end of our lesson with Grade 8's at Arbutus.

  • What did you enjoy about the lesson?
  • What would you change or adapt?

These questions will allow the students to have a voice, and will hopefully provide us with valuable feedback so that we can incorporate their ideas and make positive changes going forward!

Reflection

Assessment: Developing

"develop positive and supportive connections with students and colleagues, building professional learning networks"

Evidence

  • These artifacts demonstrate that I am beginning to consider the small, logistical areas of lesson planning that are key to running smooth and efficient classes and maximizing safety and learning for every student. Some of our feedback included making sure that we accounted for equipment organization and how to pair up partners- so those items are included in the lesson plan above.

Personal Growth:

  • Make sure to refer to this feedback when lesson planning and keep in mind all the small things that need to be included in my plans going forward!
    • partner pairing plans
    • equipment organization and cleanup
    • space usage

Goal:

  • My goal is to always have a plan for partners, equipment set up and take-down and space usage on my lesson plans going forward
