EPHE 452 Class Video

Google Classroom Class Summary

Class Video and Summary Explanation

Throughout the term in EPHE 452 we were each assigned one class in which we would create a video and small written summary of the class to be shared in the Google Classroom. We were encouraged to ask prompting questions at the end of our summary that our peers could answer. Above you can see the video I created from one of our classes, and the Google Classroom post from when I shared it.

The idea of having a student create a class video is amazing because it is another exciting way to have students engaged in the PE class. It allows students to use technology and put their own creative spin on the class. It was really interesting to see each different person's videos throughout the term!

Having students make a video after class and then sharing their thoughts and ideas helped encourage learning in so many ways. First, it definitely engaged the student who was making the video by having them review the photos and video from the class, and come up with questions for their peers. These video summary posts then worked to engage everyone else in the class by providing them with an exciting video review of what they had participated in earlier. The questions really lead our class to some amazing discussions and discoveries about our teaching beliefs.

How the Video Summary and Google Classroom Implement the Communication and Creative Thinking Core Competencies

Communication

"Encompasses the set of abilities that students use to impart and exchange information, experiences, and ideas, to explore the world around them, and to understand and effectively engage in the use of digital media. Communication competency provides a bridge between students’ learning, their personal and social identity and relationships, and the world in which they interact."

By developing this video summary and posting to our Google Classroom I am developing the skills to share my knowledge and experiences with my peers. With follow up comments and questions I was continuously engaged in the ideas of those around me, which lead to personal growth as well! Both the Google Classroom platform, and this exercise in creating the class video, were great ways to bring the use of digital media into a PE setting!

Creative Thinking

"Involves the generation of new ideas and concepts that have value to the individual or others, and the development of these ideas and concepts from thought to reality."

The creation of a video summary from each class was an great way to encourage creative thinking in a PE setting. It allowed each student  to develop their creative ideas, with the content from class, into an educational product for the rest of their peers.

Core Competencies

The BC Ministry of Education redesigned the curriculum and assessment around core competencies, along with literacy and numeracy foundations and essential content and concepts.

Core competencies are intellectual, personal, social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in effective learning.

The ultimate goal is for students to employ the core competencies every day in school and life, and for these competencies to be a vital part of the learning in all curriculum areas.

Learning Experiences in EPHE 452

EPHE 452 fosters thinking that will lead to us becoming teachers that will be able to design lessons that encourage the core competencies.

EPHE taught me that there are so many ways to bring in the Core Competencies into lessons!

Having students engage in different ways, such as making a video, score-keeping, managing, coaching, etc, all work in different ways to create confident and knowledgable students.

The end goal is to employ these competencies in all areas of their education to give students skills to move through life with confidence and a growth mindset.

Reflection

Assessment: I feel that I am developing in this big idea. I think I need to develop a greater understanding of how to implement these core competencies into every lesson.

Evidence: The evidence above shows that EPHE allowed and encouraged me to learn in many different ways. I was also engaging through my peers both in class activities and outside of class on the Google Classroom stream. This showed me there are many ways to collaborate and communicate with my peers about what we were learning in class. I feel like my understanding about the discipline concepts really progressed throughout this term.

Personal growth:  What I need to work on going forward is just always applying these disciple concepts and core competencies when making unit plans to teach.

Goal: I think I need to do more reading on practical ways to implement these core competencies in the classroom. EPHE 452 gave me amazing ideas on communication and creative thinking, and I can continue to educate myself on effective ways to implement the other competencies.
