Standards for Educators in BC
Reflection
I am at a developing level of competency in this area as I learn more about the competencies of this “big idea”. Embracing the growth mindset will allow me to be open minded and eager to expand my learning. By using classroom stream and reading academic articles, this helps me deepen my understanding. Our upcoming field experience allows us to apply our learning directly. It is important to continue to reflect on our practice, and self evaluate so we can grow.
Learning experiences in EPHE 452
The BC Ministry of Education outlines the expectations for professional conduct as a teacher. The BC Ministry of Education website offers educators and future educators a professional “code of conduct” established by the BC Teachers Council. Many of the eight principles relate to personal and characteristics and attributes including being caring, respectful, accountable, responsible, honest, ethical, and collaborative; these characteristics reflect that educators should be good citizens and role models in addition to using effective practices, being knowledgable in their subject area, participating in ongoing learning, and being mentors.
This is relevant to us in EPHE 452 because it lays out the foundation for Personal and Professional Preparation. In order to be a qualified teacher these BC Standards are ones I need to be familiar with and to work toward achieving.
I chose this artifact for it’s guiding principles. As a future teacher, and someone still developing, these Standards are a goal for me to work towards. The standards address the importance of character; working directly with children and youth it is essential that we are of good character and lead by example.
