My Experience
My involvement in academics, athletics, and fine arts has allowed me to explore my interests and develop a passion for my chosen career. Furthermore, it has given me the foundation, skills and desire to help others through various volunteer efforts in the local and global community.
I feel fortunate to be able to work with youth in the realm of coaching. I have coached soccer at St. Michaels University School for the past two years and love to see how students cooperate with each other as a team to work towards a common goal. I believe that school sport teaches many skills and promotes values that transcend throughout a lifetime while giving students unique and valuable tools to set themselves on a path for success after graduation.
I have an extensive backround in music and fine arts with nine years of piano and theory training at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. I frequently perform piano at many events around Victoria including weddings, ceremonies, and fundraisers. Furthermore, I also have a passion for singing and have been involved in many musical theatre productions including community productions with the Victoria Operatic Society. Since graduation, I have volunteered as a choral director at my old high-school (Reynolds Secondary School) and helped with the pit orchestra at St. Michaels University School. I have also been playing saxophone for over ten years and have taught saxophone lessons to youth for many years in the community.
While balancing my studies, I have volunteered since 2011 at UVic teaching as a Lab Assistant in the Anatomy, Motor Learning, and Qualitative Analysis of Human Movement labs. I also volunteer my time on the BC Heritage Fairs Society Board of Directors where I have helped organize and run week-long history camps for Grade 4-10 students across Canada since 2008. In 2010, I created an Alumni Program within the Society to keep students involved and connected across Canada. I have also volunteered globally through a house building project in Vincente Guerrero, Mexico and helped support the start of a grass roots soccer program in their community.
I currently work as an Assistant Houseparent in the Boarding Program at St. Michaels University School where I feel I am gaining valuable exposure working with students from all over the world. As they live in Victoria by themselves, I am directly responsible for their care and well-being. I have learned so much from the responsiblity associated with this role. Many of the students I work with have English as a second language and/or are on Individualized Education Plans. I truly feel that my experience working with these vulnerable youth has allowed me to transition from a student to a professional.
Ultimately, I feel as though all of my knowledge and life experiences shape who I am as a leader, a lifelong learner, and as a future teacher.
