"In the end, it’s about the teaching, and what I always loved about coaching was the practices. Not the games, not the tournament, not the alumni stuff. But teaching the players during practice was what coaching was all about to me”

Field Hockey

As mentioned before I have been very much involved in the field hockey community and to some extent on the mainland. This sport started off just as something my parents signed me up for but has provided me with opportunities that have made me who I am today. These opportunities have developed my skills as an athlete through providing me with a place to develop my basic skills and continue to fine tune them as I was older. Along with regional, provincial, and high school teams in which I was privileged to be selected for.

High School Field Hockey

All the teams and coaches provided me with examples of different styles of coaching each with positive aspects. Looking back on these experiences I realize how much they have impacted me into wanting to become a coach and in turn a teacher. I hope to be able to continue to coach either in the community and/or at a school in the future. I also hope to continuing to further my coaching certifications as well as umpire ranking where I can throughout the future.

One tournament I was able to coach with my sister, while she typically is too busy to coach with me, this weekend we got to take a team to Vancouver which was a great experience. I learned a lot as she coaches differently than I do but along with getting to do what I love with her, it was a good reminder; I shouldn't get stuck in my ways but rather keep learning, working, and talking with others to continuously improve my philosophy and knowledge.

Travel

One of the things that peaked my interest in Social Studies, in particular History, was the privilege of having parents who believed travelling was important. I have travelled to Toronto, throughout the south and interior of BC, Banff and Drumheller, Oregon, Florida, Montana, California, Washington, Hawaii, the Bahamas, England, and France. My trips to the Bahamas, France and England especially have deepened my interested into history, even influencing my course selection. The history of England in particular I find really interesting partially because my family originates from there but also the extensive and tangled history. As for the Bahamas, it is not necessarily the country specifically, while it was interesting experience, but rather the history of the slave trade which originated around the area. One country that I have studied but have not yet visited is South Africa, it may not be the safest but the immediate history I find very interesting, tragic yet inspiring.
