Mr. Li

My name is Lawrence Li and thank you for coming to my page. I am working to complete my bachelors of education with a major in physical education and a minor in social studies with emphasis on geography. Growing up locally in the Victoria area, the opportunity to work with the school system that raised me is humbling.

My passion for education began with my early experiences with great teachers and coaches. They have influenced me to embrace adversity and to do something positive with my potential as a thinker. My journey began with the Mount Douglas Rams high school football program. The brash sports model taught me lessons about hard work but being tough was not enough. There was a responsibility to perform on the field as well as academically.

I connected with social studies and geography as these are grounded forms of education. Social studies depict the importance of history in the culture and identity of being Canadian. Geography is a common-sense yet scientific subject that is approachable by all students. These subjects highlighted the importance of having an excellent teacher. An educator should be able to make any subject interesting, attainable and purposeful.

This has led me to the University of Victoria. Outside of studies, I have been coaching a variety of individual sports like wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but football is still my current focus due to the diversity of athletes. Having a leadership role deepens my understanding of education. It all starts and ends with the students. Without an audience, there is no classroom thus I am a firm believer that individual student needs should come before my own. There would be no ego involved with teaching. I base my success as a teacher with the success of my students.

After attaining 5 years of university knowledge, along with being involved with practical coaching positions, I seek to improve my skills as a teacher and to progress forward towards my own mastery of knowledge. My current goal is simple. I will challenge myself to be creative, patient and involved.
