About me

Matt Collins's profile picture

I am a 4th year student at the University of Victoria. My two subject areas are French and P.E.

I chose to become a teacher through various experiences I had growing up. I’ve had good and bad teachers through school and the ones that made an impact were the ones who wanted to be there. I looked up to many of those good teachers who taught me valuable life lessons and I want to do the same for the upcoming generation of youth. Volunteering my time coaching basketball, dodgeball, squash and swimming has solidified my want to become a teacher. I am a firm believer in the saying, “be happy in your profession” and that’s exactly the way I want to live my life.

French Language History

K-12 (Immersion)

French has been a part of my life since I was introduced to the public school system. I thank my parents and teachers for making this decision to immerse me in a different language from a young age.

Quebec:

In grade six I had the pleasure of immersing myself in French culture for two weeks. I stayed with a French family in Quebec. My favorite part of this trip was getting interviewed at the airport for a radio station and going to village du sports.

France:

In grade 12 I had another amazing opportunity to visit Europe for two weeks and I could not turn it down. Again I was billeted with a family and during this trip I learned so much about the language and culture. I felt I absorbed more of the culture than Quebec because I was much older.

My experiences travelling and observing cultures make me better prepared to teach French. Experience is the best form of learning and I’ve had the chance to see how different cultures live and converse with one another. I believe that the oral portion of teaching French is very important and extremely useful in modern society. Seeing language in different lights, having been to France and Quebec makes me more qualified to teach and gives me valuable experience on how to go about teaching so students can better understand and appreciate the language.

Grade 11 Basketball

Athletic Experience

Playing:

I am very passionate about the game of basketball and have played since elementary school. I played up until grade 12 and in intramural leagues and recreationally while attending University.

Coaching:

I have ran after school basketball programs for youth ages 10-15 for two years and also have coached kids basketball camps grades 3-6 for 3 consecutive years. I am currently at a placement with Lake Hill Elementary coaching grades 3,4,5 boys and girls basketball.

Referee:

I have been reffing basketball at a high level for two years now at the University of Victoria intramural league.

My strong athletic background will enable me to be a more knowledgeable and creative teacher. Having the opportunity to play, coach and ref sports enables me to see sport from every perspective and will increase my ability to help students get the most out of each game and new activity they try. Having been involved with sports and learning first hand enables me to know what cues to use in different sports to help better the personal ability of the students.
