Reflection on Holistic Arts Experience
Last class we looked at the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds, a story about a little girl who believes she is no good with art, and her teacher who shows her that everyone is good at art by encouraging her to mark a paper and sign her name. This sends the girl off with her imagination to create more and more and do the best she can. The girl in the story starts her journey with a single dot on a page, and our class did the same thing. We created two different dot art pieces, one as a group and the other individually. I think this is a great way to start off a class where many people may have reservations, because it allows each person to take something as simple as a dot and explore all the different ways to represent it. We also looked at an artist that creates exclusively with dots, Yayoi Kusama. Her work is very interesting and different. Images show not just paintings and pictures but full 3D rooms full of dots in different sizes colours. I believe this activity to be a holistic experience in the sense that it gave us, (the students), control of what we were creating rather than having the teacher direct us exactly what was to be done. We were encouraged to experiment and use our own ideas collaboratively in our groups. I mostly enjoyed the activity, I personally have a hard time with art because my minds image does not always match what my hands create, which can negatively impact my feeling of confidence with my work.
