Introduction

This page exhibits the Big Idea "Learning & Effective Teaching Practices". Specifically, I feel I have addressed the competency: "implement pedagogically context-appropriate sound practices linking assessment for/as/of learningplanning for learning, instructional strategies and approaches to engage all students in relevant and personalized learning". My artifacts below are examples of the ways that I have been meeting these competencies.

Learning Experiences in EPHE 452

Learning Experiences in EPHE 452 in order to generate evidence of developing competence.

  • Linking readings on learning processes to PE practices modeled in class and discussed in academic articles.
  • Show with examples of materials created how to effectively plan for teaching in schools, assess student learning and use teaching approaches that address the needs of all students.
  • Document and reflect on own experience learning within different pedagogical approaches such as TGfU and Sport Education and articulate how you might be able to implement in your future practice as a physical educator.

Reflection

Assessment: To what level of competency do you feel you are performing the learning implied in this big idea?

Evidence: How does the evidence show your developing competencies in relation to this big idea?

Personal growth:  What can you now do based on this evidence?

Goal:  What is something you want to work on or improve on in relation to this big idea?

Explanation of Artifacts

EPHE 452 provides an opportunity to enter into a middle school, observe a class, and teach 3 lessons. This is a great experience for me to put to practice what I have been learning. The Big Idea on this page is "Learning & Effective Teaching Practices". I have chosen to post a variety of lesson plans in addition to Part 1 of my field experience. I believe that these capture my process of observing student learning, and ways of teaching that create an effective learning environment.

I have posted Google Slide Presentations that capture the visuals of my lesson plans from an earlier class, EPHE 246 (Active Health). There are 2 Outdoor Ed. lessons, one for nutrition and one for first aid, that show how I would effectively plan for teaching a high school class. I have a 30 page lesson plan document that I was unable to post due to size. This document showed how I planned in accordance to the new B.C. Curriculum.

I have also posted a group lesson that we taught to our peers in the same course (246). This lesson was focused on technology for P.E. & the classroom. This was a great opportunity to bring new ideas to our peers, practice teaching a lesson, and adapt our teaching methods to student learning.

AdditIonally, I have posted a unit plan from EPHE 352 that I completed in a group. We had the opportunity to plan a unit, and teach one lesson. We decided to do a unit on cross country, and decided to teach a lesson using the Inclusive Style (from Mosston's Teaching Styles). We used stations that had different levels of difficulty so that students could enter into the activity at their own pace/skill level. This plan was able to address the needs of all students. This was a great experience, and has prepared me for the mini practicum in EPHE 452.

Lastly, I have posted Part 1 of my field experience with my peer teacher. We were able to sit in for a P.E. lesson, and observe a variety of aspects. This was a new experience for me, and gave me new insight into the dynamics of a classroom. I was able to reflect on the methods we have encountered in EPHE 452, and compare them to what I saw in the class. This gave my peer and me a richer understanding of the classroom, and prepares us for entering in to teach 3 lessons.

Pesonal Reflection

Assessment

In regard to the Big Idea of "Learning & Effective Teaching Practices", I feel as though I am becoming proficient. I have tons to learn about effective teaching practices, but that will come with more experience. I am getting a better idea of how students learn, and observing a middle school class gave much needed insight. In my UVic courses I have primarily taught my very capable peers, so teaching students in middle school will be totally different.

Evidence

These artifacts show the work that I have put in to develop a greater understanding of how students learn, and how I need to teach to encourage learning. These also show the planning process that has occurred in order to create effective learning environments. The diverse selection of artifacts show different contexts in which I have practiced my planning process.

Personal Growth

I feel as though I have learned from past shortcomings, and been able to apply my learning to the next task. There will always be things I want to fix for the next teaching experience, and I find it valuable to look back on these resources. Over the past couple years I have been absorbing a ton of new information, so it is important for me to keep documenting the changes that occur in my pedagogical beliefs.

Goal

Based on these artifacts, and the Big Idea being discussed, my goal would be to include strategies for implementing personalized learning in my lesson plans. Fortunately, we have 3 lessons coming up shortly to try out new ways of teaching that create equitable, just, and engaging learning environments

Self-Assessment

Within the Big Idea "Learning & Effective Teaching Practices" I addressed the UVic Teacher Competency "implement pedagogically context-appropriate sound practices linking assessment for/as/of learningplanning for learning, instructional strategies and approaches to engage all students in relevant and personalized learning". I assess myself at an extending level of this competency. I have demonstrated that I have been able to perform the learning skills with confidence, and have gone beyond the requirements and content of this course to include learning from other classes and domains. I clearly understand the concepts I have shown, have experience with teaching practices, and have a desire to learn more about how to fulfill this competency.
