About me

Connor Baerg's profile picture

Hello!

Welcome to my digital portfolio. I am a pre-service teacher at the University of Victoria, working towards a BEd that specializes in Physical Health Education & English.

Why do I want to teach?

I want to be a teacher so that children and adolescents can have positive experiences physically engaging their bodies. My hope is that through these experiences everyone will develop a desire to pursue health and fitness throughout their lives. I want to teach because I believe I have the leadership skills to guide a group of students towards this goal. Physical Health Education is so much more that sports and games. For me, it was a place to grow physically, emotionally, and socially, and I believe that good teachers can facilitate this growth in any student at any school.

My experiences

I was born in Abbotsford, but have lived in Victoria for about 20 years. I went to school on the Saanich Peninsula, and have remained very involved with the schools there in coaching and volunteer roles. I have enjoyed physical activity and sports my entire life, and had the opportunity to develop physiological and social skills through my time in the public school system. It was during my time at Stelly's Secondary that I developed a passion for outdoor education.

I am on staff at Friendship Community Church as the Director of Young Adults ministry. I have served in a middle and high school youth leader capacity there for 8 years. I also am employed at a honeybee farm, and have been able to learn the skill of beekeeping.

Before coming to UVIC, I received a certificate for a Discipleship Training School through Youth with a Mission Maui. During my time there I travelled to Thailand & Indonesia, where I volunteered at orphanages and taught children how to surf.

This portfolio

In the portfolio, there is a mini portfolio that exhibits my experience in EPHE 452. You will find 4 pages that represent Big Ideas from the Teacher Education Program competencies. On each page, I have posted relevant artifacts and explanations for why they are important.
