Open-Ended Questions

"Asking students open-ended questions is a great way to assess student learning, and check for understanding. As mentioned in the TGfU booklet, open-ended questions “promote deeper-level thinking and how to develop a larger tactical repertoire for enhanced game play” (Hopper, Butler, Storey, p. 178)."

Reflection

My ability to understand discipline concepts is proficient. I have demonstrated a solid understanding of our key concept TGfU, and supporting concepts as I discussed on this page. We have discussed the concept of transfer of learning in EPHE 452 and I think it applies to my learning. I will be able to apply many of these concepts to teaching other disciplines. The main idea of understanding of how learners learn, understanding the uniqueness that each learner has is one of the foundations of teaching. My goal now will be to continue to develop knowledge about discipline concepts and to apply these concepts in the classroom.

Level of competency

Learning Experiences in EPHE 452

The focus of EPHE 452 is teaching us principles and pedagogy so we can concentrate on the WHY of the activity and provide personalized learning to our students. Teaching games for understanding has been the primary focus of the course that incorporates these principles. This is a fundamental discipline related concept. Within the TGfU model modifications and adaptations enable us as teachers to personalize learning for all students. In this pickle ball video we can see first hand the use of progressions and modifications in order to facilitate learning. This allows for inclusiveness, better overall class engagement, adapting to varying skill level, collaboration, students achieving instant success, and enhancing the teacher’s ability to assess student learning.

The 4 R's

The four R’s is another discipline related concept that we have discussed as a class. I chose this artifact because it directly relates to my field experience. Once students develop an understanding of the 4 R’s they can transfer their learning to all other net sports, and possibly to other sports. Other discipline related concepts include the use of demonstration, and open-ended questions to support learning.

Our stream discussion about asking open-ended questions is a simple but effective strategy that allows students to explore their own interpretations and understanding and gives us, as teachers, a better idea of where a student is at. Encouraging students to not depend on teachers or coaches for direction allows the student to develop critical thinking skills.
