About Me
I am currently a student at the University of Victoria in the EPHE program working towards a bachelor of education. My two teaching areas are Biology and Physical Education.
Teaching is not the only passion I have. I play many sports, my favourite ones being wrestling, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and tennis. I have a goal to try every sport I can competitively, even if only at intramural level. This is to prepare me for my teaching career but also to help me understand every sport better. I can relate better to a student if I have played their sport or shared any interest with them. I try to learn these sports through the internet (youtube, advice sites etc.) and from any experts I can get my hands on. Tennis is a sport I taught to myself and I have reached a novice level. The idea of self teaching is really interesting to me, what students can be left to do on their own with varying amount of instruction. I would like to incorporate my experiences as a self taught student to my teaching. Besides sports I also have a great passion for animals. I have been working with the SPCA summer camps for two years now and I am very passionate about what I teach the kids at camp. It is really inspiring to see what these children take away from their camp experiences. I want to help raise a generation with awareness of not only issues endangering animals, but with general knowledge of how to treat and take care of them. Finally I greatly enjoy cooking. I have worked as a cook for over six years in various capacities and have learned some very valuable lessons. I am always trying to improve my technique and learn from my peers.
I have a strong belief that teachers can be the single most influential figure in an adolescent's life. I want to carry this belief into my teaching to raise students that are aware of their own abilities, but also how to use them in the world. To raise humane adults with a goal for what they want to achieve and to make the correct choices along the way. I hope to build an environment for my students to be able to learn critical thinking, to question their sources, and research on their own. Technology in the classroom is an important tool that I am trying to learn more about. I try and think of ways I could use it to reach a more technologically gifted generation of students. I am very excited to graduate and put my ideas into practice. To discover and fine tune my own teaching style. I know that I am in a profession that I can seriously make a difference in the world, and there is no other job I can picture myself doing.
