About me

My name is Brett Fleming and I am a student at the University of Victoria, pursuing a BEd in the Secondary Education program specializing in Physical and Health Education and History.

Growing up in the Okanagan surrounded me with endless opportunities to explore the outdoors and push myself to new physical limits recreationally and competitively. I grew up playing baseball, basketball, volleyball, rugby, track and field, racing up at the track, dirt biking, fishing, kayaking and hiking, each of these activities shaped me into who I am today, the team sports taught me camaraderie with my fellow teammates and the individual ones helped me learn about myself, with internal drive and balancing of emotions. Out of high school I wanted to be a physio therapist, I started at Okanagan College in the Human Kinetics Program where I also played varsity baseball. Once I graduated I received a summer job in Fort McMurray Alberta to be a youth baseball coach, this is where I decided to change my career path and enroll in the Secondary Education Program here at UVIC. Coaching was extremely rewarding, the players listened and were feeding off every piece of information they were being taught. We went on to win provincials that summer and I have not looked back since, seeing the smiles on the kids faces not only when they won but when they were learning made me very happy. They came from different backgrounds and areas of town and throughout that season I watched them become a little family. In my teaching I want me class to get along and become part of a school family to relay and depend on each other and I want them to come to me and have trust within me that I can help them with any difficulties they come across. I could not be happier with the career path I have chosen for myself and I cannot wait to get into my own classroom.
