Ultimate Peace Youth Camp

I was selected to attend the Ultimate Peace Camp for youth in Israel this past summer.  I will be the official videographer and will help in the camp as well.   This camp uses Ultimate Frisbee as a tool to teach young people in Israel.  I created a video once I got back because of how emotional the camp was this summer in particular with all of the chaos occurring at the time.

Program Philosophy

The program takes place in a politically charged region, but political discussion and solution finding is deliberately avoided. The focus of the UP program is on providing a positive, educational, multicultural experience that is healthy, enriching, inspiring, and fun for youth. We hold the belief that the widespread changes in behavior we aspire to facilitate will require deep and enduring shifts in awareness. Consequently, our programs are designed to focus on altering mindsets and perceptions by providing shared experiences in which recreational enjoyment, personal reflection, culturing sharing, and experiential learning are emphasized and balanced.

Core Principles and Practices

Ultimate Peace projects will practice, model and convey our five core principles: mutual respect, friendship, non-violence, integrity, and fun.

Grounded by our principles, every Ultimate Peace project will strive to:

  • Create opportunities for youth from disparate backgrounds to play and learn Ultimate together
  • Organize teams of expert players and coaches to teach and serve as role models for youth
  • Focus on skill-building, relationship building, team building, community building and developing young leaders
  • Engage parents, coaches, teachers, and the business community in all we do
  • Develop capacity in local communities to ensure sustainability.

UVic Ultimate

Ultimate Frisbee is the sport that has captured my heart since attending University.  When I started, there were barely enough to field a team.  Now we have 25 people on our A team and 23 people on the B team.  Every member has told me that this team is the biggest source of stress release and happiness at University.  I have to agree.  We went from never winning a game, to winning Canadian Nationals and the Santa Barbara Invite last year and being ranked in the top 10 in North America.  Building this team into what it has become today has taken a lot of hard work, but it was completely worth it.

My duties have included: recruitment, finances, fundaising, media coordinator, communications, rostering, jersey orders, team selection, B team co-coach, also the social aspect of mediation and caring about the players and helping them if/when they are having a hard time.

This year we also became recognized as Vikes officially.

Trashwell Cup Tournament

One of my friends on the University of Victoria's Ultimate Frisbee team was in a horrific accident where he was left a quadrepelegic.  I organized an event for him at UVic, not only to raise money, but also to show our love and support for him.  Here are a few links to news articles that were written and also a video recap of the event.  We ended up raising over $6,000.

Victoria Youth Ultimate Initiative

It was noticed that there was a major lack of Ultimate Frisbee knowledge in the high school and middle school teachers, and thus, in the students being taught by them.  It is because of this, we started the Victoria Youth Ultimate Initiative.

WEBSITE HERE

This initiative allowed myself, and a few other players, the opportunity to teach physical education classes all over greater Victoria.  There I was able to teach many classes from grade 5 to grade 12 and from only one time to multiple classes.  This experience was extremely valuable, yet challenging.  Another purpose of teaching in the schools in Victoria was to build interest in a youth league in the spring.  It was a success last year and we are expanding this year.  I have more about this in the 'Teaching Resources and Initiatives' page.
