UVic Valkyries 2nd Year

The team tensely awaits the call, "BROOMS UP!"

Humble Beginnings:

In the beginning, the club had little resources and equipment. They made due with what was available to them. They used christmas tree stands as the hoop base, with random rocks piled in to brace wooden poles that had hula hoops duct taped to them. Whenever a hoop was knocked over, play had to stop as the team had to strategically replace rocks to keep the poles up. They only had one volleyball to use as a quaffle, and their bludgers were half the size they were supposed to be, and made of foam. The brooms also ranged from sticks found nearby, to tiki torches (minus the fuel container of course), and even toilet plungers!

Now, the team has bought several volleyballs and dodgeballs to replace the old quaffles and bludgers. They bought an official Snitch outfit and several official brooms at the World Cup. They also revamped their hoop structure into plastic piping and tubing. The equipment has completely changed since the club started, including team jerseys.

The World Cup team returns to offer some new intensity and passion to the teams' practices

Creation of the Club:

In the fall of 2010, a poster hanging in the cafeteria advertised a UVic Quidditch game being held. Naturally, I was curious, and decided to check it out. Upon arrival, there were only 8 people there, two of whom were the founders. This core group of eight would be known as the original quidditch team, and the group that brought quidditch to UVic. Numbers varied each week, and often declined, leaving only 4-6 practicing. In the fall of 2011, the UVic Quidditch Club was formed, and numbers drastically increased. This trend continued, and soon UVic competed in the fifth World Cup in New York. Three members on the team even went on to play for Team Canada in the 2012 Global Games.
